Kit: 10 footballs, 30 cones, bibs in two colours, two goals
Shadow the Ball
Setup: A line of four or five players about two metres apart, facing you across a 20m width. A ball in your hands.
How it works: You move the ball left and right and up and back; the line shifts together to stay in front of it, keeping their spacing and a low, ready stance. Add a call so that when you lift the ball above your head the nearest player steps to press an imaginary opponent while the rest slide to cover behind. Short, sharp reps with a rest between sets. This is footwork and, more importantly, moving as one.
What to say
- “Tell them: 'stay connected — if the man beside you moves, you move.'”
- “Say: 'small, quick steps, stay on the balls of your feet, never cross your feet.'”
- “Look for even spacing — no gaps for a pass to slip through.”
Easier
Slower ball movement and a wider gap between players.
Harder
Speed the ball up and add the press-and-cover call so one steps while the rest shuffle.
