Move as One

Setup: A line of four or five players facing a coach or ball-carrier, across a 20m width. Cones mark their starting line. No contact.

How it works: Warm the bodies and plant the night's first idea: the line moves together or not at all. The defensive line shadows the ball as you walk it left and right, everyone staying level, shuffling in and out as a connected unit with no one shooting ahead or trailing behind. Add a trigger — when you drop the ball to run, the whole line steps up together on the call. Mix in some tracking of a jogging attacker to warm the change of direction. A connected, talking line in the warm-up is a connected, talking line in the game.

What to say

  • Tell them: 'stay level with the players either side of you — no one ahead, no one behind.'
  • Tell them: 'talk the whole time — a quiet line is a broken line.'
  • Tell them: 'we move up on the trigger, together — not when you personally feel like it.'

Easier

Walk the whole thing and keep numbers small, so staying connected is easy to feel first.

Harder

Add sudden direction changes and a longer line, so holding the connection takes real communication.
