The scrum as a body-position skill, not a shoving match — a strong flat back and a calm sequence built up one safe layer at a time.

Backs and Bases

Setup: A 15×15m square. This night is about a strong, safe body shape. Read your union's current age-grade scrum laws before you run it — numbers in the scrum, how far it may travel, and how much it may push are all set by grade and change season to season.

How it works: Warm the parts that keep a scrum safe: shoulders, neck and core. Bear-crawl the square with a flat back, hold a strong plank on your call, then partner up on the knees and gently push shoulder to shoulder to feel a braced spine and neck. No straining and no necks bent — this is about switching on the muscles that hold a good position. Finish with a few strong flat-back holds so the shape of the night is already in their bodies before a scrum is built.

What to say

  • Tell them: 'flat back like a table top — never rounded, never arched, chin off your chest.'
  • Tell them: 'push through your shoulder, not the top of your head — the head is never the tool.'
  • Tell them: 'strong belly, strong neck — brace before you push.'

Easier

Hold the positions statically with no partner push, just learning the flat-back brace.

Harder

Longer bear-crawls and a slightly firmer partner hold, still with no strain through the neck.
