Place and Race

Setup: A 20×20m square, one ball between two. Check your age-grade framework before the night — at U10 the ruck is introduced gradually, with small numbers and no big pile-ups.

How it works: Partners jog the square passing backwards. On your call, the carrier goes to ground, places the ball at long arm's length back towards their own team and springs up, while the partner picks and carries on. Make a game of it: quickest tidy place-and-up in each pair wins the round. The long placement is the whole ruck in one habit — a ball put down far behind the tackle is a ball your team can win, and a ball dropped short is a ball you lose.

What to say

  • Tell them: 'long arms — reach the ball back towards your own players, do not drop it under you.'
  • Tell them: 'chin up as you go down, place, then pop straight back to your feet.'
  • Tell them: 'two hands until the very last moment, then place it soft.'

Easier

From a kneel rather than a full go-to-ground, just learning the long reach.

Harder

Add a light touch from the partner before the placement, so they place under a little pressure.
