Restart Shape

Restart Shape — split short, stagger the wings, hold the long channelWingWingLongTargetKeeper signals, the team moves into shapeEveryone knows their spot for short and for long

Setup: Half the pitch, cones marking the keeper's restart zones — short corners, the two wings, and the long central channel. The team walks in first, no opposition, learning the picture.

How it works: Build the shape before the speed. Walk the team through the restart structure on the marker board, then onto the grass: on the keeper's signal, the corner-backs split wide and short, the half-backs and midfield stagger up the two wings, and one target man holds the long central channel. The point is that everyone knows the three or four places the ball can go and where they are meant to be for each. Jog it, then quicken it, keeper lifting a hand to start the movement each time. No ball struck in anger yet — tonight is about a picture the whole team shares.

What to say

  • Tell them: 'the puckout is a team skill, not the keeper's problem — everyone moves on the signal.'
  • Tell them: 'know your two jobs for every restart — where you go on the short, where you go on the long.'
  • Tell them: 'width first — stretch the pitch so the channels open before the ball is struck.'

Easier

Walk it throughout; fewer options, just short-wing and long-central; call each option out loud as a group.

Harder

Add a shot-clock feel — the keeper must strike within eight seconds of the signal, so the movement has to be sharp and on time.
