The first night decides whether a new player ever comes back, so this session is engineered around one promise — nobody stands alone, nobody is exposed, and everybody goes home having caught, passed and scored — whether they are a nervous eight-year-old, a teenager who moved to the parish, or an adult brave enough to try the game late.

Kit: 12 footballs (size 4), 26 cones, bibs in two colours, a few soft footballs for total beginners
Buddy Up
Setup: A 25×20m grid. Before anything else, pair every newcomer with a friendly regular as their buddy for the whole night — the coach makes the pairs deliberately, nobody picks. A ball between each buddy pair.
How it works: The buddy system is the whole session in miniature, and it starts here. Buddies jog and pass together inside the grid, the regular quietly showing the newcomer the ropes — how to hold the ball, a gentle hand-pass, where to stand. Roll in easy name games so the group learns who is new: pass and call your buddy's name, then swap and learn a neighbour's name too. Keep it warm, slow and low-pressure; the aim of the first ten minutes is simply that every new person has a friend, knows a few names, and has already touched the ball a hundred times without anyone watching them fail.
What to say
- “Tell them: 'buddies, your one job tonight is that your newcomer never feels lost.'”
- “Tell them: 'learn three new names before we finish the warm-up.'”
- “Tell them: 'lots of easy touches — no pressure, no watching.'”
Easier
Total beginners use a soft ball and catch off the bounce; buddies stand close so passes are short and sure.
Harder
STEPR: experienced buddy pairs add movement and a longer pass so the regulars stay challenged while they mentor.
The rest of this session is free — along with 3 more this week.
