Close to goal with a defender breathing on you, there is no time for a backlift — the fisted point is the ladies-football finish that never lets you down, and tonight we make it a reflex.

Kit: 10 footballs (size 4), 26 cones, 16 bibs (2 colours), 4 tall poles or a set of posts if you have them
Fist the Target
Setup: Pairs facing each other across 6m, one ball. A cone or line behind each player as a target. Spread pairs across the pitch with plenty of room.
How it works: Start with the technique, slow and clean: ball resting on the flat, open palm underneath, the striking fist coming through with a firm punch and the eyes staying on the ball. Partners fist to each other, catching two-handed and resetting. Then make it a game — fist the ball over your partner's head to land beyond her target line for a point, she does the same back. Weave the warm-up jobs through it, wrists and shoulders loose, a few sharp turns, so the body is ready to strike with intent. Both hands get a go before anyone keeps score.
What to say
- “Tell them: 'ball on the flat palm, punch through with a firm fist.'”
- “Tell them: 'eyes on the ball, not on where it's going.'”
- “Tell them: 'strike through it — don't just tap and hope.'”
Easier
Fist from the hands off a gentle self-toss to a partner two metres away; catch off the bounce.
Harder
STEPR: weak hand only for a round; fist to a moving partner who has jogged into a new space so the strike happens on the move.
