December, seven o'clock, the main pitch is closed and you have an hour on the floodlit astro — so we go small, fast and warm, sharpen the touch the hard surface exposes, and leave the diving tackles and the forty-metre solos for the grass in spring.

Kit: astro boots or trainers (no long studs), 10 footballs, 30 cones or spots, bibs in two colours, 4 small goals, warm layers for the breaks
Lights-On Rondo
Setup: A tight grid on the astro, one ball, most of the group keeping it with two or three defenders. Everyone in astro footwear — long studs have no place on this surface. Keep them moving from the first second because a cold night bites fast.
How it works: On a freezing astro night the warm-up has one urgent job: get warm quickly and stay warm, because the cold and the hard surface are unforgiving to a stiff hamstring. A busy rondo does it — a big group keeping the ball with a few hunters, so everyone is passing and shuffling constantly. Layer the mobility through it, but keep the feet moving between every drill; no standing around in the cold. The astro rewards a clean quick touch and punishes a heavy one, so the warm-up doubles as a touch primer. Keep clothing warm until bodies are genuinely hot, and build gently toward speed rather than sprinting cold on the unforgiving ground.
What to say
- “Tell them: 'keep the feet moving — we get warm fast and stay warm.'”
- “Tell them: 'astro footwear only — long studs grip too hard and turn ankles.'”
- “Tell them: 'quick clean touch — the hard surface shows up a heavy one.'”
Easier
Bigger grid and more keepers so possession is easy while the body warms; walk the mobility, then build.
Harder
STEPR: shrink the grid and add a touch limit so the tempo rises and the warm-up sharpens touch under mild pressure.
