Shift and Shout

Setup: Lines of four players holding hands or linked at the elbow across a channel, facing a coach with a ball. This looks odd for two minutes and then it teaches the whole night: a zone moves as one connected unit.

How it works: Warm the body and the idea together. The coach walks and jogs the ball left and right along the top of the channel; the linked line shuffles across together to stay between the ball and the goal, everyone talking. Unlink and repeat with players a stride apart, still moving as one on the flight of the ball, not on its arrival. Mix in mobility on the walk-backs. By the end the group should feel what a zone feels like — connected, sliding together, nobody breaking off to chase. Build the tempo before any real defending.

What to say

  • Move on the flight of the ball, not the catch — you slide while it travels.
  • Stay connected — a zone with a gap in it is just a row of individuals.
  • Talk the whole time — the zone is held together by voices, not by cones.

Easier

Keep the line linked longer and move at a walk while the sliding habit forms.

Harder

Add a second ball switched quickly across the top so the line must slide the full width fast.
