React and Go
Setup: Pairs in a 15m channel, a ball between two, a coach or a call to react to. Transition is about reacting fast, so the warm-up trains the first step to a signal as it raises the body. Build the gears.
How it works: Warm up around reaction. Partners jog and pass, and on a call or a dropped ball they both sprint to win a loose ball or touch a line first, then reset. Add fast hand-passing on the move between reactions so the hands and the feet both wake up. Rising tempo across the block, with the last rounds at a genuine sprint off the signal. The single habit being planted is instant reaction: the half-second you save reacting to a turnover is the half-second that beats a defence before it sets.
What to say
- “React first, think second — the fastest first step wins the turnover.”
- “Fast hands on the move — the ball has to travel the instant you win it.”
- “Every rep off a signal — we are training the body to explode on the turnover.”
Easier
Slow the tempo and use only standing reactions while the first step sharpens.
Harder
Add a second ball or call so players must read which cue to react to before they go.
