Scores in the last ten minutes — shooting with tired legs and a thumping chest, the right shot chosen and taken when the game is on the line.

Shooting Ladder

Setup: Two shooting channels into the goal from the 20m line, a line of footballs at each. Keeper in for the last third of the warm-up only, once they are warm. Everyone eases up in gears before a single hard strike is taken.

How it works: Climb a ladder of intensity so the striking muscles are ready to fire. Start with relaxed points from in front, off the ground and off the hand, both feet. Add a jog-in before the strike, then a change of angle, then a fisted finish on the move. By the final rounds you are shooting off a burst with the heart rate up. A cold hamstring or hip flexor asked for a maximum strike is a pull waiting to happen, so the ramp is the safety, not a delay to the fun.

What to say

  • Both feet from the first ball — we do not get to choose our foot in the 58th minute.
  • Head still, eyes on the spot you are aiming at, not on the ball.
  • Ease up the gears — full-blooded strikes only once you are genuinely warm.

Easier

Stay off the hand and in front of goal longer; fewer angle changes.

Harder

Finish each round with a first-time strike off a moving pass.
